Flyttsak experience complete

Our flyttsak experience is now complete, other than waiting for our Swedish plates to arrive. Special shout out to @Solk for all his help. For anyone thinking about bringing a 4Runner (or any other vehicle) to Sweden from the US, these are a few details about our move:

  • It cost about $3000 extra to bring the vehicle in a 40-foot container with all our personal goods. Shipping took about 3.5 months due to the container/vessel congestion issues around the world.
  • Our moving company handled the Tullverket (customs) process, which consisted of submitting some relatively simple paperwork/forms.
  • Once the container arrived, it quickly passed through Tullverket, who provided our moving company with the customs/flyttsak forms, which mentioned the vehicle as a moving good.
  • Do not get temporary insurance from an insurance company. Simply take the Tullverket form to the nearest office (Frihamn if in Stockholm) and buy insurance from them. It takes five minutes and is the cheapest option.
  • Submit all forms to Transportstyrelsen, including the original car title and evidence showing we owned and used the car for more than a year in the US. Processing and approval took approximately three weeks.
  • The only modifications needed before registreringbesiktning were:
    • Stock side mirrors did not have blinkers, so we replaced them before leaving the US.
    • Change yellow parking lights to white.
    • Remove tint from driver and front passenger side windows.
    • Add trailer hitch (bought from beckab.se).
  • The registreringbesiktning was completed by Johan H. at Besikta Tumba. Very nice guy. He was ok with the fact that we have yet to modify the electronics/cable for towing a trailer. Not sure how each inspector feels, and I suppose it is luck of the draw.
  • Plates should be sent within a week according to inspector.

Tusen tack again for all your help. I am happy to answer questions for anyone who is considering this same process.

Actually, it is not necessary to have the towing hitch present at besiktning. It´s an optional item. No big deal now.
But it means it´s optional to bring it at the next inspection/besiktning.

A little SFI:

Great!  I love that car!

Thanks for sharing all useful info as well.

If not done yet - to protect your lovely car I suggest you make sure to give it a high quality rust protection, like "Dinitrol" or similar.  Do this already now - before winter and all the road salt that we have here. Otherwise the underbody and chassis will rust really bad in a few years.

Welcome to Sweden!

BTW - I have the exact same tow hook on mine  :-)
